Going home for the holidays?

AFTER all the hard work in getting the Visa and then to further set in stone the validity of your Visa by obtaining a Landing Permit when you arrive Japan, you're thinking that you might wanna head home for the holidays.

This is the time you'll have to remember to get a Re-entry Permit (再入国許可 / Sainyukoku Kyoka). The importance of this is, if you leave Japan without a re-entry permit, you will lose the status of your current visa and will only be allowed to enter Japan on a Tourist/Temporary Visitor Visa which will happen upon your arrival at the port of entry. Your original visa status may not be restored.

There are two different types of Re-entry Permits:

Single Entry Permit (¥3,000): Allows you to leave and return to Japan only once.

Multiple Entry Permit (¥6,000): Allows you to generally leave and return as you please.

Both of these permits are only valid for the duration of your present visa status, so if your visa expires tomorrow, so does your Re-entry Permit.

You can apply for Re-entry permits at your nearest Japanese Immigration office.

Payment for the Re-entry Permit is usually in the form of a revenue stamp. This revenue stamp can be purchased at the convenience store nearby or at another location in the building.

You will need the following:

- Passport

- Alien Registration Card

- Application for Re-Entry Permit (Available at the Immigration office)

Go to the Immigration office, fill out the form for a Re-Entry Permit, hand in your passport with the form to the immigration officer, and wait for your Re-Entry Permit stamp (sometimes issued on the same day).

If your Re-Entry Permit is not approved on the same day of application, you will be given a postcard or receipt requesting for your return to the office at a later date. The office hours of most immigration offices are 9:00am to 12:00pm then 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The offices are closed on weekends and national holidays.
